Skilled Independent -Subclass 189

The Australian Skilled Independent (subclass 189) visa is intended for skilled workers who are not sponsored by an employer or a start or territorial government*. It allows a successful applicant to live and work in Australia permanently.

  • This differs from the subclass 190 skilled nominated visa, which is is part of the SkillSelect program and requires applicants to be nominated by a territorial or state agency, after filing an expression of interest with them. 
  • After getting an invitation from a state or territory of Australia, you are required to an online application within 60 days. The information in your application should meet the one that is provided in your Expression of Interest and also should be supported with necessary evidence.

Features of the Skilled Independent Visa

  • This is a points-based visa, intended for skilled workers who have not been nominated by an employer or government body.
  • It allows successful applicants to live and work anywhere in Australia on a permanent basis.
  • Some of the visa holder’s dependents can be included in the application

Benefits of the Skilled Independent Visa

  • A successful applicant and any dependents may:
  • Live and work in Australia as permanent residents,
  • Access the Medicare health care scheme,
  • Pursue basic and advanced education,
  • In time, apply for citizenship, and
  • Sponsor their own relatives for permanent residence.

Requirements – all applicants for the subclass 189 visa:

  • Must be less than 50 years old
  • Must have skills relating to a qualifying occupation 
  • These skills must be assessed by an accepted authority
  • Must speak English sufficiently well
  • Must score at least 60 points on the appropriate test table
  • Must meet certain health and character requirements

Dependents 

Applications for a subclass 189 visa can include the applicant’s married or unmarried partner, as well as the children and dependents of either partner.

Points Assessment

To be successful, applicants will have to score 60 points (or more), which are awarded for several different factors. The main factors used to evaluate candidates are:
  • The applicant’s age,
  • English fluency,
  • Employment history, and
  • Education.
