Healthcare in Australia

Australia’s healthcare is the best among the various available to any citizen of a country which is provided at a very modest cost. In Australia, people are ensured with a strong healthcare system that is divided into private and public (Medicare) sectors. 

Medicare – Australia Healthcare

Medicare is the national healthcare program used for covering the health needs of Australian Residents. Medicare is largely funded through money that is collected by a levy on income of people. Through this system, eligible people are given access to free treatment at public hospitals. They are also given subsidized or free medical treatment by practitioners such as specialists, doctors and participating optometrists. All Australian citizens and residents with a permanent visa are eligible for the benefits of Medicare.

Seven days after landing in Australia, Australian Visa holders can go to the nearby Medicare office along with their travel documents and passport. A Medicare card along with its number will be issued for the applicant when all the enrolment requirements are met. You need to remember that Medicare does not provide any ambulance transport to hospital or ambulance service in emergencies. State governments of Australia provide emergency services on a ‘fee for service’ basis.

Private health Insurance

Immigrants with a status of Permanent Residence and Australian residents can also use a vast variety of health care products private insurance companies. 30% of deduction is offered on the premiums of private health care organizations. This rebate is only offered to the Australian residents who have the eligibility for Medicare. The types of costs of private health cover are many and vary in a wider manner. Hence, it is recommended to check the various details of an insurance product, carefully, before taking it.

Emergency Treatment

When emergency treatment is needed, it can be done through the emergency departments of hospitals or some medical centers. You can find the private and public hospitals in the White Pages telephone directory that contains their list. It is necessary to take the private health insurance card or Medicare card along with them, when they need hospital treatment.  Patients need to consult a medical center or their family doctor first, when there is no emergency. You cannot have an appointment with a medical specialist until it is not referred by a GP.
