Australia Education

Education system in Australia is regarded as one of the world's best. Australian school teachers are well qualified and highly dedicated on an international level of standards. Their system aims to give all students, irrespective of race, gender or religion, the skills and knowledge that they need to outshine in the rapidly changing world.

Australia Education system encourages parental involvement and actively assists Australian immigration by helping newcomers to settle in their new lives. New families who have children or teenage kids can find it happy to know the benefits of Australian educational system.

The education system of Australian is mainly divided into five main areas:

  • Secondary school
  • Preschool
  • University
  • Primary school
  • Career and vocational training
  • Pre-school

Preschool refers to education provided for children a year before to the first year of their full-time primary school education. It is largely seasonal and operates only during school terms of children from 3 years old till school starting age. These schools may be operated by government, community organizations or by private organisations.

Primary school

Primary school is for ages 6 to 11/12.

Secondary school

Secondary school is mainly for children between 12 and 16 years. Year 11 and 12 are the senior secondary levels which have to be completed for securing university entrance.

Schooling is compulsory for students in all states and territories until the age of 15. Although students can leave at that age, many students continue their education until the tenth class. After this class, many students continue their studies to complete their 12th class.

There are 39 universities in Australia having around 3,000 - 50,000 students, many of these universities are controlled by the government. Universities offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs in contemporary and traditional subjects like electronic business, IT, and science. University courses begin early in March and finish by late in November. The academic year is divided into two semesters where some universities offer mid-year entry, which is at the beginning of the second semester. A few universities in Australia have a trimester system. International students are well-supported by the universities of Australia as a large number of students are obtaining visas to study in Australia each year.

Vocational and Career Training

The Australian training and vocational education system are seen as a front runner in the education industry. The qualifications incurred by the Australian education system are recognized for their industry driven focus. Many of the vocational institutions are closely linked with the industry. Courses are developed in consultation with industrial organizations and employers. Courses are offered at Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutes or Private institutions. The duration of these courses may differ from six months to three years.

School Year

Australian school year starts in January and ends in December and includes two six-month semesters which are of two terms. Courses are structured into six or three month units.

Private vs. Public Schooling

Children can get their education at either public or private schools. About 30% of school-age children attend 'private' or 'independent' schools, which are known for charging tuition fees and mostly they are controlled by religious organizations. Many private schools provide boarding accommodation, which is catered separately for boys and girls. The majority of these schools charge low fees. However, there is a significant proportion spent towards fees in excess of AUS$20,000 for boarders and AUS$10,000 per annum for day students.

Preparatory Sections in leading fee-paying schools

Education at public schools is free in many states. However, most schools extract a minimal amount as annual fee used for covering extra activities. Children’s parents utilizing public schools need to purchase items like uniforms and books and also require to pay for outings and camps etc. Most public schools are co-educational where boys and girls are encouraged to participate equally in class.

Enrolling children into school

To enrol children in a school, you need to contact the school in person or by telephone. Applicants need to have their proof of date of birth, visa or entry documents and other papers that include school reports that are related to their past education. Applicants may also need to show immunization documents. Sending their children to a public school at a primary school age, limits the applicant’s choice regarding where to live. There are many useful links in The Commonwealth Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs where you can find different independent schools and from which you can choose the one near your residence. If you are planning to send your children to school, then you need to visit the Association of Independent Schools website of the territory or state living.
