Study in San Francisco

Famous for its relaxed lifestyle and excellent universities, San Francisco is a popular choice for Indians with a USA student visa. In northern California, the city provides both excellent educational facilities and a pleasant lifestyle.

One of the west coast's older cities, San Francisco combines turn-of-the-century charm with modern architecture and high tech facilities. A very walkable city, San Francisco is great to explore on foot, with quirky neighbourhoods and small boutiques appearing around every corner.

There are over 30 higher educational institutions in the San Francisco Bay area. As well as smaller, specialist schools, there are large institutions like the University of California, Berkeley, which is home to over 35,000 students. Stanford, a world-class university, and Silicon Valley, home to iconic technology companies like Apple and Google, are both nearby. As a result, many students come to study and stay on with a US work visa

What's San Francisco like?

Located in northern California, the city provides a balance between the extremes of Los Angeles to the south and Vancouver to the north. The climate is temperate, making it a pleasant place to live all year round with cool summers and warm winters. Built on a series of hills, with water on three sides, beautiful views abound. San Francisco is one of the most popular destinations for Indians with a US tourist visa, and it's easy to see why when you look across San Francisco Bay on a bright morning, with the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz in sight.

Student lifestyle

Student protests and alternative lifestyles have been gathering media attention since the 1960s, and yet most students in San Francisco are more focussed on their studies and future job prospects than starting a riot. With such a diverse range of schools to choose from a US study visa truly opens doors. Student-run societies cover many areas of interest, from political debating to business networking. Sororities and fraternities are major campus institutions. New students apply for membership and, if accepted, may have access to housing run by these groups, social events or a network of established professionals willing to lend a 'sister' or 'brother' a helping hand.

Cost of living

San Francisco is the second most densely populated city in the USA, so the cost of living is high and housing can be particularly expensive. However, many universities provide convenient and affordable accommodation for students on their campuses. There are also a wide range of scholarships and bursaries available, some for as little as $50 to help with buying books, others which cover the complete cost of an education.

Working while studying

For students, USA visas do not automatically allow you to work while you study. If you want or need to work full time in addition to your studies, you may be better off getting a US work visa, and studying part time. However, for students looking for part-time work or to arrange work experience, it is possible to arrange authorisation from the US immigration service. Call MoreVisas today to discuss your needs.
