Study abroad in America

Study abroad in America
If you have decided you want to study abroad in America, you will need to not only apply to the educational facility of your choice but you will also need a visa.

Neither of these guarantee automatic acceptance but if you are lucky enough to get authorisation, it's important to plan your finances properly to ensure you get the most out of your stay.

When you study abroad in America, your budget may come from a number of different sources: perhaps you have a grant, hopefully you have some savings and maybe you plan on getting an on-campus job after you arrive.

The amount of money you have may seem like a lot and indeed, it may feel like there is no chance of you running short whilst you are overseas. However, the cost of living can quickly add up and you may be surprised at how soon your nest-egg disappears.

Therefore, when you study abroad in America it's a good idea to sit down before you go and work out your total budget for the trip. This will then allow you to apportion each cost and allocate money for all of your expenses...and some indulgences too!

Part of the reason you may have wanted to study abroad in America is the opportunity to see more of the country and soak up the culture. But if you blow your cash you may find that you don't have enough money to see everything you want. This is why it's essential to make sure you pay for all your bills first and are disciplined with your budget. You can then work out how much money you have left to fit in the must-see destinations on your list.

The chances are that you will be used to paying for things in a different currency so trying to budget in two different denominations can make it almost impossible. Convert your cash into US dollars mentally; this will help you understand how much things will cost when you study abroad in America.

After you have calculated how much your essential living expenses will cost, set aside around 10-15% of your budget for emergencies. This may sound like a big chunk but if the worst happens you will need to be prepared. And if it's not needed, you have some extra cash to spend on yourself at the end of your stay!
