Live in America

Live in America
Moving to a new country means learning about a completely different culture and way of life and embracing it to the full whilst you are there.

How to Live in America :

If you decide to live in America, it is a good idea to learn a bit more about its history and the modern way of living. This will help you to understand the references and culture and settle in more quickly.

American society embraces democracy which means the people choose officials to represent them and their views. Elections are free for citizens to vote in and the elected representatives are responsible for helping their constituents with difficulties or problems they may be experiencing, as well as providing them with information. If you live in America, you can call upon your elected official for assistance.

Any individual or person who has decided to live in America is provided with protection against discrimination and has the freedom to express their opinion, regardless of their culture or religion.

Life in America :

If you live in America for any length of time you will very quickly become familiar with the declaration of independence which was created in 1776 after the Revolutionary War. The declaration outlines the fundamental way people live in America: every person is born with the same human rights which are not created by a government and may not be taken away by a government.

The national anthem is the 'Star-Spangled Banner' which refers to the famous stars and stripes flag of the USA. If you live in America, the anthem and the flag are two things which will become very familiar to you after a relatively short period of time.

The flag has thirteen red and white stripes and 50 white stars. This is not a random decoration but a nod towards the nation and its history: the stripes represent the 13 original colonies which joined together and each star represents one of the 50 states recognized today.

If you live in America, it will also be useful to be aware of what is known as the Bill of Rights. This is a list of rights provided to the people and limits what steps the government can take. In short, the main ones are:

• freedom of speech
• freedom of religion
• freedom of the press
• freedom to gather or hold lawful meetings in public places
• freedom to own firearms
• freedom to protest government actions and campaign for change

The Bill of Rights also promises that any individual accused of a crime or wrongdoing will be treated fairly and 'due process' will be followed. Cruel and unusual punishments are also prohibited by the Bill.
