You may not want to make the move to permanently live and work in USA as you might plan on returning to your home country after some time overseas. Alternatively, you might be hoping to make the transition more permanent after you have been there for a while.
There are many different visa types you can apply for, both permanent and temporary to live and work in USA. Not everyone who wants to live and work in USA will need a visa; often it depends on the country you are coming from. For example, most citizens of Canada are free to travel into the USA without a visa.
It is also important to understand that a visa does not absolutely guarantee you passage into the USA. A visa allows you to arrive at a port of entry and request permission from the Department of Homeland Security to proceed. The Customs and Border Immigration Official will determine how long you will be permitted to stay. They are also authorized to refuse entry if they have any concerns about the information you have provided or the true purpose of your visit. If you are refused entry your visa fee will not be refunded.
The amount of time you will be given to live and work in USA on a temporary visa is usually determined by your home country's arrangement with America. There is something known as a reciprocity agreement which means that both countries agree to allow visitors from the other to stay for a certain length of time.
Whether you are applying for a permanent right to reside, also often referred to as a green card, or a temporary visa, make sure you leave sufficient time before you are due to travel for the paperwork to be completed. Immigration officials in the US aim to ensure all applications are completed within four months but there are no guarantees this will be the case. It's therefore imperative that you apply well in advance of the date you want to travel before traveling to live and work in USA.
If you know someone who has applied for a visa for the USA successfully, do not assume that you will have to wait for the same length of time. There are seasonal peaks which can affect waiting times and your application may require a different type of assessment such as an interview or additional administrative checks which can also mean it takes longer to receive a decision.
