UK Visa Reform Harms British Universities

As the British government tightens UK student visa regulations, British universities are feeling the pinch. But what should you do, if you're thinking about studying in the UK?

Studying in Britain is the dream for many Indian students. At MoreVisas, we are committed to helping people realise their dreams, and despite the difficulties we are proud to be able to say that our services have been successful.

Conservatives cut visas

The current British government is led by Prime Minister David Cameron, a member of the Conservative Party. Conservatives are known for wanting to reduce immigration to United Kingdom as they believe this is what their supporters want. As a result, one of their targets has been to cut back the number of visas being issued, including those for international students studying in the UK.

Universities need international students

Obviously, this is a problem for disappointed students. However, it is also a problem for UK universities. As the new academic year begins, the number of overseas students in UK institutions has dropped by 20%. As students from outside the EU typically pay significantly higher fees than locals, this has caused a massive drop in funding for many universities, as well as problems filling courses.

What should you do?

Despite the gloomy statistics, there are still plenty of UK student visas and UK work visas available – you simply have to be able to complete all the red tape correctly to get one. A key issue for the Conservatives and university enrolment boards alike is the ability to speak and study in English. A recognised English language proficiency exam is essential to the success of your UK student visa application. This is a common requirement for international students studying in the UK, the USA or Canada, however only certain tests are acceptable and you must meet certain conditions. MoreVisas can advise on which tests are most likely to improve your application, and where you can get these qualifications.

Consider alternatives

Applications to universities do not have to be exclusive, so we recommend, if you can, considering other institutions in other countries. While it may be true that a British university is the best for your chosen subject, there are many other world-class universities in other countries, perhaps in places you haven't considered. For example, many Dutch and Danish universities teach higher level courses in English as standard. This allows local students to get used to using English in an international academic setting, and also provides easy access to courses for English speaking students from India.

Seek expert advice

The increasing challenges students have to overcome to study in the UK make the advice of expert visa consultants more important than ever. At MoreVisas, we're proud to provide a comprehensive service, with advice targeted to the individual. As a premier visa consultancy, we offer advice and support for students aiming to study overseas, whether they want to do engineering in Hong Kong, Shakespeare in England or haven't yet decided.
