The term 'visa' is one that many people are familiar with but do you know exactly what it means or when you will need one.

What is Visa ?

A visa is an additional requirement, not a replacement for a passport, but an official form of approval for an individual to enter a foreign country.

However, it's essential to understand that being granted a visa still does not provide the automatic right to enter a foreign country. If border control believe you have gained the visa by misrepresenting your situation or are concerned about any other aspect of your planned travel, you can still be refused. Therefore, whilst a visa is an essential document to travel to some countries, it should be seen as only the first step and not a fait accompli.

Although the concept of a visa is almost universally understood, the actual circumstances of when you need one vary from country to country. Each nation is permitted to set its own visa requirements; this includes both the documentation you need to supply along with your visa application as well as the circumstances in which you need to apply for one.

How to apply for Visa ?

Applying for a visa also costs a fee; this is normally only a nominal sum.

The processing times to obtain a visa will vary significantly depending on the country you plan on visiting and where you are traveling from. Some nations have reciprocity agreements in place which make it easier to get a visa. Other countries such as Australia have a relatively simple visa application process – this doesn't mean it's simple to get approved! - Whilst others such as Russia are renowned for making it more difficult to even apply for a visa

Some countries offer the ability to apply for a visa at the point of entry. Whilst this is possible, it's not normally recommended as if you get declined for a visa, you will have had a wasted trip.

There are many different types of visa available and it's important to select the one which matches your reason for traveling. Each visa will have terms of entry attached and breaching these conditions could see you thrown out of the country and banned from returning. There are some types of visa which permit working, often with restrictions on both the nature of employment and the duration, whilst others do not allow this at all. Other types of visa are more suitable for students or those planning on completing training whilst overseas and of course there is also a visa category for individuals who simply want to enjoy a holiday!
