Country Profile: Trinidad and Tobago

Trinidad and Tobago Flag
These beautiful Caribbean islands are famous for their relaxed lifestyle, vibrant music and stunning weather. A popular tourist destination, many people don't realise that over a third of the population of Trinidad and Tobago are Indian, making it a very welcoming choice for Indians looking to emmigrate.

Trinidad and Tobago is one of the wealthiest countries in the Caribbean with a high GDP. Jobs in Trinidad and Tobago primarily focus on the tourist industry, manufacturing and exploiting the country's natural resources. Entrepreneurs and investors are welcomed as the country expands its links with the rest of the world.

Which language is most useful?

English is the official language of the islands, and is used in most written communication. Many people speak a local dialect or creole, and many of the 525,000 Indians speak Hindi. The country is close to Venezula, so Spanish can be an advantage for those working in international trade.

City or country?

Trinidad and Tobago is a small country. The two main islands are Trinidad, where 96% of the population lives, and Tobago, home to most of the remainder. There are also a number of smaller islands and for the very wealthy, such as Ian Flemming, creator of popular movie hero James Bond, it's even possible to buy your own island. Beautiful beaches and lush rainforest abound but a busy city life is hard to find.

Weather and climate

Just a few kilometres off the coast of South America, Trinidad and Tobago has a tropical climate. The weather is warm all year round. Record highs are around 35-40C and the lowest temperatures rarely dip below 15C. The country has a wet and a dry season, each lasting six months, and is not in the hurricane belt, meaning that serious storms rarely trouble the islands.

Cost of living

Trinidad and Tobago has a low cost of living, although imported items can be expensive. As the island has a strong agricultural sector, high quality produce is available at low prices and tropical fruits grace tables all year around. Regular contact with the USA and Venezula mean that most world foods are available, at a price.

Expat communities

The Indian community in Trinidad and Tobago is well-established with many families having lived on the islands for several generations. As a result, the language and traditions have drifted somewhat, blending with those of other Trinidad and Tobago residents. However, the strong presence of Indian families makes it easy to find religious, cultural and educational opportunities for children and adults. Approximately half of the population of Trinidad and Tobago is Hindu with another 17% being Muslim.
