The Planning Commission have said that it will meet with the National Security Advisor this week to discuss how feasible the move is. Planning Minister Rajeev Shukla has said that a meeting has been arranged for October 7 and that if agreed it could lead to better foreign exchange and improvement in the current account deficit. This is the difference between the inflow and outflow of foreign exchange.
Shukla points out that the current Indian visa system is an impediment to foreign visitors coming to India and encourages them to go to countries like Nepal, Bhutan and Sri Lanka.
The visa on arrival system is already available to certain countries including new Zealand, Singapore, Japan and Vietnam.
