It has been revealed that a US embassy official working in Vietnam has taken more than $3m in bribes and put through 500 visas fraudulently. The man has admitted he used the money to buy nine overseas properties.

US Visa Fraud

Michael Sestak admitted the charges this week in Washington saying he was part of a conspiracy involving five others from both the US and Vietnam. This group of agents recruited customers by advertising their “deal” online. Applicants were promised their US visas would be approved, even if they had been declined previously. They asked for $70,000 per application.

It was found that Sestak was himself recruited by the other group members, having been targeted because of his role in the embassy. The US attorney general was initially alerted after a letter was sent outlining how the scheme worked and included details of at least seven people who had used the service.

Sestak faces more than 24 years in prison.
