US Grants Green Cards to Foreigners
The latest statistics from the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revealed that green cards have been granted to around 100,000 overseas nationals allowing them to reside permanently in US. The data also shows an overall increase in employment-based permanent residents over previous year.

Among all the states of the US most of the new permanent residents chose to reside in California which holds around 20% of the country’s total permanent resident population followed by New York, Florida, Texas and New Jersey. More than half of the new permanent residents stated that they planned to reside in one of these five states.

Out of the total 990,000 cards that were granted, family sponsorship application forms the greater part accounting for 66%. 16% of the new permanent residents acquired their status through employer sponsorship. The major part of employment cases were filed in either the employment based, second (EB2) or third (EB3) preference categories. The data also revealed that the yearly diversity visa lottery represented 4.6% of new permanent residents.

Mexico is the first country of origin accounting for 13.6% of permanent residents, followed by China representing 7.2%, India with 6.9% and the Philippines constituting 5.5%. Other countries include the Dominican Republic amounting to 4.2% of Green cards, Cuba with 3.3%, Vietnam holding 2.7%, and South Korea forming 2.3%.

Colombia, El Salvador, Pakistan, Nepal, Haiti, Nigeria, the United Kingdom, Burma, Jamaica, Ethiopia, Iran, and Canada are the other countries which represented 2.1% or less individually with regards to new permanent residents.

A spokesman of the department said that the statistics provides a helpful perception into the countries from where the majority of immigrants are entering the country, the list of categories they are applying for and the states they are choosing to reside in.
