US government shutdown will not affect US visa applicants

Despite the shutdown of the US government due to an impasse on a spending Bill, visa applicants have been reassured that essential services will still continue to run and this includes immigration departments. The government shutdown was due to the Republicans refusing to accept a six week budget unless Obama agreed to a one year delay on the Affordable Care Act.

This has meant that the US border will stay open and front line staff will screen airline passengers and luggage. Green card applications will continue to be processed, but the E-verify system which allows employers to check the visa details of their employees will not be operational. Passport services will be delayed and immigration hearing are expected to take longer than usual. Illegal immigrants will still be deported.
A spokesperson from the US State Department has said that the Bureau of Consular Affairs will continue both in the US and abroad allowing US visas to be issued as usual. However there may be some staff reductions. It was also pointed out that the funding for the Bureau was over several years, so there is plenty in reserve to keep the department running.
