It has been announced that the UK Home Office has abandoned its idea of charging a £3,000 bond to high risk overseas visitors after the Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg threatened to block it.
The idea was first suggested by the Home Secretary Theresa May in June this year and was due to start from this month. It involved those visa applicants who were considered at high risk of overstaying having to pay a £3,000 bond which would be returned when they left the country. Those countries on the high risk list included Pakistan, India and Nigeria. The idea was also found to be discriminatory by officials from these countries.
The bond idea has been mooted several times over the last few years and different versions have been both accepted and rejected in recent months. This has led to much confusion among other governments and visitors. This had led the government to be accused of undertaking a shambolic process and that it was not the way to form a strong immigration policy.
