UK Immigration: Plans to Launch Global Talent Visa on 20 February 2020
The government of the UK has declared that a new, global talent visa will be started on 20 Feb 2020 as part of post-Brexit immigration. The visa will have no cap on the number of candidates, and also applicant will not need to have an employment offer in the UK prior to entry and will substitute the UK's Tier-1 exceptional talent visa, it was capped at 2,000 for each year.

The global talent visa will be accessible to extremely talented immigrant nationals working in several specialist fields, including research, science, and mathematics among others. Candidates will also need an endorsement from a verified UK body such as The Royal Academy (or) The Royal Society of Engineering. The declaration comes as the UK exits the European Union on 31 Jan 2020.

UK Global Talent Visa Importance

Under present UK immigration rules, extremely talented workers are subjected to the precious and highly bureaucratic UK Tier 1 exceptional talent visa process currently managed by the UK Home Office. The UK Tier 1 visa is capped at 2,000 per each year, but the cap has never been achieved.

After the Brexit, the new global talent visa will tend to be managed by UK Innovation and Research, the agency accountable for the UK's public research budget.

It means that appeals will be processed by individuals that are well-placed to manage the scientific credentials of appellants, rather than the immigration officials of the UK.

Sir Jim McDonald, Royal Academy of Engineering President, expressed his pleasure at the latest visa being managed by researchers rather than public servants.

Global Talent Visa Doesn't Make Much Difference

Christine Jardine, Liberal Democrats, refused the UK global talent visa as a ‘marketing gimmick and she said that Boris Johnson is unable to understand what makes our science sector so strong. Modifying the name of a visa and lifting a cap is not a serious plan.

Ms. Onwurah stated: Closing the Erasmus scheme, refusing visas to scientists from Asia and Africa, imposing the least salary of £30,000, these all negatively affect the abundance and quality of the UK scientific base.

The launch of the UK global talent visa on 20 Feb will indicate the end of the UK Tier 1 exceptional talent visa, which started in 2014. While several industry experts have welcomed the announcement of a global talent visa, several were fear that with it being open to extremely talented people only, it will still fail to overcome chronic skills deficits.
