The UK Universities Receive more than 100,000 EU Students Applications for the First Time

The number of overseas students, who have applied in the UK universities, has breached the mark of 100,000 for the first time, as per the figures suggested by UCAS. The total of 45,220 was the highest for the year 2015. There was no impact of Brexit, on the EU students who wish to study in the UK.

After the January deadline, the statistics regarding students, who had applied for courses, shows that applications received from EU students, hailing from outside the UK, moved up by 3.6 percent in 2018.

Helen Thorne, Director of External Relations, UCAS, stated that the universities in the country were popular with EU and global students, owing to the high quality of the teaching and academic experience.  There were several factors, which influenced the increase in the number of applicants, from the European Union, as well as other areas.  The weak pound had made the UK cost-effective center for studies, and the confirmation of the Government that EU students, who start their course, during this autumn, will benefit from the active arrangements of financial support had been helpful.

More English school leavers had applied, registering an increase of 0.4 percentage, reaching 37.4 percent. Women had a better probability to apply, to a university compared to men. In Scotland, 57 percent women were more likely to apply.  There were 12,420 less UK applicants, registering a 2.6 percent fall compared to last year. The overall reduced applications figures were 559,030 (from 564,190) because of the decline in the UK population segment of 18 -19-year-olds.

The reason behind this is the baby slump, seen in the Nineties, when women postponed to have children, owing to recession and decided to pursue their careers.  There was an increase in university attendance, and women studied for a longer period. This meant fewer young children. It is expected that the scenario will change in the future, owing to increased fertility, and more immigration in the present century.  The demand for nursing courses fell among students, aged above twenty years.
