The other side to Hong Kong
Hong Kong is well known for having a bustling modern city, filled with busy people living their busy lives, businessmen and women running high profile successful companies, a cosmopolitan city that never sleeps, like New York, the fast rich city for fast rich people. But as well as this way of life lies another that is not well documented, that takes the shine off the otherwise amazing city of Hong Kong. There are, as there is everywhere people who are not rich, who not not run highly successful companies or work in them. The poor of this country living in the shadows, shunned yet living side by side the lights and hustle and bustle. Hong Kong was once a part of the British empire, and now around 1.3 million people live in poverty in this rich country, a country that still attracts so many billionaires, each year, the country does have a welfare system but poverty is still extremely high. The many immigrants that travel and stay in Hong Kong do contribute to this but as immigration requirements are high to stop others becoming a burden to Hong Kong the problem remains. The elderly of the country who are vulnerable are very poverty stricken and reports show that one in three of the elderly n Hong Kong are below the poverty line.

It is becoming increasing more obvious that there is a rich and poor divide in Hong Kong, with the gap becoming so big some worry there is no way way back, you will be extremely rich or extremely poor, caged homes are notorious in the country for the vulnerable poor people who have nowhere to love but for a price can rent a bed a “caged home” which is separated by another by a metal bar, these homes are infested with bugs and and germs. How can such a divide and such conditions exist in a country that attracts the rich from all over the world? Many believe that the rich get richer while the poor only get poorer and with reports showing how people live in Hong Kong, this seems to be the case. The rich have the opportunity to vote, the poor do not. Hong Kong seem to think that ignoring the problem and the poor of the country then they will not exist, ignorance is bliss. People that travel to Hong Kong for a better life are the ones that suffer the most, the disadvantages that a migrant faces in Hong Kong are very high. Others who suffer by poverty are children, single women and the elderly. Migrants are not put off however, they still see the high wages that are available n the country as an attractive reason to enter Hong Kong and benefit from the riches available but the reality is often much different.
