During the past couple of decades the Filipino community in Canada has rapidly increased from below a thousand to upwards of 500,000, it is now thought to be one of the biggest immigrant demographics in the country. 2012 saw a rise in individuals from the Philippines being granted permanent residency in Canada, the increase was around 140% from the number in 2004, with many more travelling to Canada for the purpose of study or work. Both Canada and the Philippines reaped the benefits culturally as well as economically.

From the beginning of the 90's there was a steady rise in the number of immigrants who were travelling from the Philippines, with many of the arrivals coming as live in caregivers. One location which has continued to be a popular place amongst the new arrivals is Winnipeg, which is home to 1 in 10 immigrants from the Philippines.

The rules of family sponsorship for Canada, entitles the permanent resident to give sponsorship to parents, grandparents, children and spouses. A newly established Super Visa Program has been formulated, this entitles successful qualified applicants to long term visitors visas. The programs aimed at family reunification have been reflected in the amount of arrivals who are from the Philippines.

A large amount of the immigrants take up work in either caregiving or nursing, there are a number of programs in Canada which are aimed at job opportunities in this area. Both countries benefit from Filipinos working in Canada, The Canadian shortages get filled and through doing so the Philippines  receive around $2 billion each year in remittance.

A lot of the communities Filipinos continue to hold ties within their homeland, this has built up the bilateral relationship between the two countries, which has been strengthened recently by the traumatic aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan.  The Canadian government and community have donated more than $20 million to the Philippines in an effort to provide substantial aid.  It is gestures, such as the donations, which show just how close knitted the countries have become over the years.

With the increasing number of residents who are choosing to permanently or temporarily reside in Canada each year, the bond is expected to flourish greatly offering more and more benefits to Canada and the Philippines. The heritage and character of Canada will continue to be enhanced through the Filipinos being in the country in future years.
