people living in Britain with little or no English
A census is a nationwide survey in the UK to provide figures and statistics on the makeup of the country, this is repeated every seven years. By analyzing the figures of the census this shows the foundations of the country with the prime objective being to study the population but many other factors are taken into account.

An analysis of the figures of the census reveals that the majority of people living in the UK whom do not have a good understanding of the English language, do not have a job. There are nearly 800,000 in the UK who speak little or no English and more than half of these people are not working - according the the official figures.

It has been revealed in the findings that there are significant differences in the employment chances and lifestyles of migrants in the UK who have a limited understanding of the English language compared with the average population of the country.

The migrants in the UK who have little or no level of English are 50% more likely to be out of work than native citizens and three times as likely to have no recognized qualifications. The study also reveals that those who are employed are in the lowest paid and most manual jobs if they do not have a good level of English.

The problem is more widely spread in women with over 60% of those in the UK unable to speak to national tongue being female.  This is due, in part, to the fact that many women from countries such as Bangladesh and Pakistan are migrated into the UK as wives and suffer the most acute levels of social exclusion in British society.

The census discovered that over 3.7 million people in the UK do not have English as their main language. More than 785,000 people admitted that they either do not speak English at all or do so as a low level. On the day of the census, those who spoke English as a first language were 72% employed, compared with 48% of those who did not speak English, or speak it well.

The government have recently spoke of making an understanding of English becoming a Visa requirement, much like it is in many other countries such as the U.S.A and Australia where a formal test is given to all prospective migrants to check their understanding of the English language. But the country where the language actually originates from, does not have this test at present. Though a good grasp on the English Language is not yet essential in the UK it is entirely beneficial for employment opportunities and better social interaction with natives.
