Swiss President Feels the Need to Increase non-EU Worker Quotas
Johann Schneider-Ammann, the rotating president of Switzerland, who is also the economic minister, stated in an official statement that he wants to give work permit to more than 2000 highly skilled professionals to take jobs in Switzerland from outside the EU.

While giving an interview on a public radio yesterday, Mr President said that he wants to raise the number of work permits issued to immigrants coming from nations other then EU, from 6500 to 8500 per year.

Till 2014 the number of work permits issued to immigrants from the non EU nations was 8500. The number was reduced to 6500 in 2014 February as the Swiss citizens wanted to limit the entry of EU workers, which led to reduction of the non-EU worker quotas.

Schneider-Ammann believes that an increase in the quota for non EU residents would impact the professionals whose jobs are related with the creation of 4 - 6 new jobs in the country.

During the year 2016 the Swiss organisations were permitted to hire up-to 6500 workers from non EU zone. Out of the 6500, approximately 2500 were given temporary residence permits whereas rest 4000 were given short-term permits that allow them to stay for 1 year. During the year 2014, the breakdown was 3500 were given temporary residence permits whereas rest 5000 were given short-term permits.

The decision to raise the quota can be attributed to the increasing demand of the non EU workers, which is evident from the fact that the annual federal quota for the temporary residency was exhausted by September 13. This indicates that the Swiss provinces such as Geneva, Zurich, Vaud and Basel City are dependent on foreign workers.
