During the past year, the Government of Canada has made several significant improvements, to the Sponsorship process for spouses, which has resulted in the reduction of the backlog. Moreover, there is a shorter time required for processing.  This measure has made the reunion with their spouses, fast and easy for Canadians and also for permanent residents.

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada had announced in December 2016 that it was undertaking steps to reduce the backlog of spouse applicants by 80%. It also intended to cut down the processing times to barely 12 months. Also, the spousal sponsorship application process was scheduled to be made efficient and easy to navigate.

The Minister of Immigration, Honourable Ahmed Hussen, announced that the Government had been successful in meeting the commitments made by it.

80% of the backlog, in the global spousal sponsorship, existing on December 7th, 2016, had received final decision, regarding the applications made. There was a reduction in the pending spousal applications, from 75,000 to 15,000 at the end of 2017.

On December 31, 2017, the commitment of processing 80% of spousal applications received in December 2016 was met.

Additionally, after the introduction of the new package for spousal sponsorship applications in December 2016, IRCC responded to the feedback received from clients and stakeholders and made further improvements in the application process. It was made simple and easy for sponsors, as well as the applicants, to understand it. Many improvements were made to the package in June 2017.

Now there were fresh updates in the application kit. This would definitely lead to better process and improvement of the client experience and ensure that the processing of applications was quick.  The Minister of Immigration, Honourable Ahmed Hussen, stated that behind it is the belief that the Government is strongly committed towards family reunification. It was important to reunite couples and make a strong Canada. Canadians, who marry abroad, need not have to wait for many years, for immigration of spouse, or remain uncertain, regarding their ability, to stay in the country.

In 2018, IRCC has a plan to reunite 66,000 spouses and dependents, with their families, which compares well, with the average of 47,000, in the past decade.
