Syrian refugees in UK

The United Kingdom's Deputy Prime Minister has spoken today date 28th January 2014 regarding the current crisis in Syria. The UK have been reluctant to offer asylum to the millions left destitute in the country, they have however flown over aid in an attempt to assist without transporting anyone away from the devastation left there.

The Deputy PM, Nick Clegg has announced that asylum will now be offered to those deemed the most vulnerable, and it will be on a temporary basis. At present those who are females, elderly or disabled will be given priority. It is due to the fact that these people are more at risk or sexual violence and torture in their homeland at present. He expects the amount to be in the hundreds but has no set target and no limit. This is going towards the vibe that the UK have a long and proud tradition of offering sanctuary and refuge to those in need.

The UK’s government have already distributed over £600 million in aid to Syria, this makes them the second largest giver of humanitarian aid around the globe. With the conflict in Syria continuing this is meaning more and more syrians are being forced from their homes and now is the time for the UK to act.

The Government of the UK have said that they cannot feasibly help all those in need, so they have to prioritise and help those more at risk, such as women, children, the disabled and the elderly.

Labours Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper has hit out at the deputy Prime Minister by saying to split families up like this is barbaric. She says ‘’How can a supposedly humane country deem it acceptable to split wives from husbands, children from fathers, surely this goes against all we stand for’’ The truth is that the UK is a small island and home to 60 million people, it simply cannot accommodate an extra 9 million people which is the current figure for the Syrian refugees at present. This means that priorities do need to be established. Nobody will be forced to migrate to the UK, but the option will be given - to some.

Those who are offered, and accept to relocate to the UK will be offered full protection. They will be provided with housing, food and finances though it is unclear yet what, if any, benefits these people will be entitled to. Their safety however, is guaranteed.
