SEVP report reveals 2% increase in international student enrollment at US

SEVP report increase in international student at US
Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) has released a quarterly report, referred to as ‘SEVIS by the Numbers’, pertaining to international students studying in US. The report highlights 2% increase in enrollment by international students, out of which 75% were from Asia.

The report released by SEVP, which is a part of USA Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations, has its basis data and information gathered from the SEVIS or Student and Exchange Visitor Information System. 

The web-based system, SEVIS, has information of the exchange visitors, alien students, and their dependents while they live in US. According to this database, as of 1 April, 2014, almost 1.02 million international students were admitted into the two streams F (academic) stream and M (Vocational) stream. Also, 75% of all international students hailed from Asia, with China alone accounting for 29%. The prime 10 countries from where student citizens hailed from were Mexico, India, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, China, Canada, Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Brazil.

The report presented also provides information about how many and which international students pursue Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, or STEM, coursework. Thus, as per to the report, males comprised 67% of international students pursuing studies in the STEM fields. Also, the engineering stream comprised of 43% of all international STEM students. As for India, STEM fields had 78% of all of its students. 

Also, according to the report, 77% of SEVP-certified schools had 0 to 50 international students. 72% of the international students were admitted into Bachelor's, Master's or Doctoral programs. And also, the three states of California, New York and Florida had the maximum number of SEVP schools. An SEVP school is one which can enroll international students. The SEVP is part of HSI (Homeland Security Investigations) and the HSI and the U.S. Department of State coordinate their work and cooperate as part of their work and duties.
