A recent report has highlighted the fact that global students annually add 22.6 billion pounds to the economy of the UK. This reveals that the country derived a benefit which is ten times greater than the cost to educate them.

The Kaplan International Pathways and the Higher Education Policy Institute released a research titled 'The costs and benefits of international students by parliamentary constituency' with the aim of pressing the government for introducing better welcoming policies meant for global students through the parliamentary constituency.

This will impact on decreasing the numbers of international students observed in the recent years.  The study focused on the international students at the first-year level, who were attending universities in the UK during 2015-16. It is important to note that students from India figured in the third place among foreign students in the country.  China had 62,105, the US stood at 10,545 and India at 9,095.  The Official data released reveals that the trend of decline in the numbers of Indian student from stood reversed registering a 27 percent increase in 2017 from the figures of 2016.

The HEPI has a hope, that this research would provide a momentum, to the insistence of international students, seeking their removal of their numbers, from the immigration figures, of the government led by the Conservative party, calculated annually. Nick Hillman, Director HEPI stated that persuading the Home Office of the fact that global students always benefitted the country was a difficult task. The study had included all the costs and had come out with the proof that these were indeed small while comparing to the great benefits derived from them.

The report of the institute was submitted to the Migration Advisory Committee of the UK. In turn, it has received orders from the Home Office for conducting an assessment on its own to study the impact which the foreign students have on the UK economy.

The HEPI is seeking that MAC should use the data given by it and submit a report before the scheduled September 2018 deadline. Linda Cowan, MD Kaplan International Pathways, issued a warning that the country was losing ground in recruiting foreign students to Australia and other countries.

Ensuring that the United Kingdom provides a forceful and smart offer, as an ideal place to pursue studies, is a challenge now. For gaining success in it, we need the government must boldly commit that the country welcomes global students while considering the Immigration Bill. Stopping to count the students among immigrants, in the national net statistics on migration, would be an important step she added.

Another fact revealed is that apart from the tuition fees, the spending done by non-European and European students is the main factor to support local economies.  London gained 4.6 billion pounds annually, and Sheffield was a major beneficiary in its ratio to the economy.

The recent data assembled by the London Economics made the calculation of the financial contribution done by the foreign students, like the spending on academic/living expenses, and balanced it against the cost incurred for providing urban services to them.

The report has provided ample evidence that foreign students provide major benefits and the students hailing from non-European Union countries pay a high fee, and add value equal to 102,000 pounds per head to the economy in the UK.
