Record Number of Hyderabad Students Flock to US

Recent study from a leading think tank of Washington DC revealed interesting facts about the influx of international students to the US. The study has thrown light on the expenditure of students on foreign degrees.

The report has also revealed that, China has ranked first out of the 74 countries holding 284,179 F-1 visa holders (for full-time students), followed by India representing 168,034 F-1 visa holders between 2008 and 2012. South Korea stood in third position holding around 110,000 F-1 holders and surprisingly Saudi Arabia in fourth position with 53,000 followed by Canada accounting for 51,000 F-1 visa holders. 

The report even stressed that 21% of the students across the globe are opting the US for their higher studies. Also, the report stated that the international students spend $21.8bn towards tuition fees and $12.8bn for the daily needs .Notably, 45 % of international students have extended their visas after completion of their studies and secured jobs under the optional practical training (OPT) program. The OPT permits international students holding F-1 visas to work for minimum 12 to maximum 29 months after they complete their graduation from an educational institution of US. 

The report has closely scrutinized the flow of students from India and disclosed that majority of F-1 visa holders representing around 30,000 were headed from Hyderabad and Secunderabad. This figure is equivalent to the combined figures of Mumbai with 17294, Pune with 5551 and Delhi representing 8728 F-1 visa holders. A total number of 4000 f-1 visa holders are from Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada.  Chennai represented 9141 and Bangalore accounted for 8835 F-1 visas, whereas, Vadodara and Ahmedabad together represented around 9000 F-1 visas. On the other hand, Beijing and Seoul topped the list of cities with regards to F-1 visas representing around 50,000 each. 

The study also revealed that two-thirds of international students have enrolled into science and technology, business, marketing and management fields. Out of total 168, 000 F-1 visa holders from India, 70% of them have enrolled into science and technology stream, around 80% in masters program and 11% in doctorate degrees. On the other hand, students who have come to the US for studying social studies represented around 8000. Students from India spend more than $5bnto study in the US between 2008 and 2012.
