Quebec is Likely to Overhaul Immigration Policy

Quebec preparing major reform to immigration policy
The immigration minister of Quebec, Kathleen Weil is planning to amend its immigration policy to help immigrants enter the country easily. She added that this is the right time for Quebec to evaluate its immigration model and the way the province selects, welcomes and joins international workers to the job market.
Ms. Weil said to the Canadian Press that she has plans to introduce a big reform of relations between Quebec society and new immigrants, which will overhaul the province’s immigration norms.

The number of immigrants welcomed, selection procedure and desirable countries of origin and the significance of being proficient in French language will be considered in the new immigration regime.
However, the importance will be given to the economy and balancing between the recruitment of immigrants and workforce. Quebec is mainly focusing on finding desirable candidates who can address the skill shortages.

Reportedly, the federal government amended its selection system for new immigrants. Focusing mainly on filling jobs, potential candidates must produce a declaration of interest demonstrating their ability to address the employers’ requirements.
Apparently, employers in every sector throughout the province will be invited to state their workforce needs and provide a profile of the ideal worker to bring to Quebec. Professional associations will be requested to consider candidates holding diplomas from overseas.

Weil stated that she is wishing for an immigration system that is similar to the Canadian model. She added that she will devise a new immigration policy and an action plan upon public consultations. Further she added that, she will present a bill in the fall to revamp the existing laws.
Specifying the importance of overseas nationals’ knowledge in French language before their arrival in Quebec is one amongst the challenges of Quebec government. Weil stressed that new overseas nationals must be proficient enough to find jobs and to better integrate to the society.
