Quebec Temporary International Workers

The Quebec Government has announced approximately $55 million in funding to support the integration and recruitment of temporary international workers. The Quebec government’s minister of labor, Jean Boulet, told $20.9 million from the $55 million fund will assist global recruitment efforts by companies in the province.

Quebec is experiencing a labor deficit unseen in higher than 40 years and presently has one of the significant job vacancy rates among the provinces of Canada.

To satisfy their labor requirements, an increasing number of companies have been turning to temporary international workers since the beginning of 2018. In 2018 observed temporary work permits announced for the province of Quebec jump by 36% over 2017.

A report by CBC News reveals that this trend has stimulated since the Oct 2018, the election of the Quebec province’s new Coalition Avenir Quebec (CAQ) government, which launched a temporary 20% drop in the number of immigrants allowed to the Quebec province this year.

Support for Recruitment and Providing Moving Expenses

Among the initiatives published on August 26 are promises related to partial subsidization on foreign recruitment efforts by companies and cover up to CAD 1,000 in relocation costs for temporary international workers.

A news announcement from the ministry of labor published that the funding will assist approximately 2,000 Quebec firms in their global recruitment efforts. The outlasting $33.9 million will go to a couple of programs that work with temporary international workers to support them integrate into the labor market of Quebec.

The temporary international workers' recruitment is an alternative that more and more companies are turning to in their attempts to address labor deficits, Boulet announced in a statement.

The minister announced the new proposals will further ensure that the temporary foreign workers' integration into Quebec’s labor market is positive and strong.

Others have told that resorting to temporary international workers to fulfill the gaps is not a practical long-term resolution to the fact population of Quebec is aging and its labor pool is contracting.

The CAQ government tells its policies of immigration will assure immigrants are correctly integrated and those who are admitted must satisfy existing labor requirements in the province.
