Canadian PM Trudeau, known for his inclusive functioning behaviour, wore a 'veshti' and participated in the celebrations of the Tamil harvest Pongal festival accompanied by fellow Tamilians in Canada. He also stated that he had a great time and also wished the assembly in the Tamil language at the festivities.  John Tory, the Toronto Mayor also participated in the festivities, and both the dignitaries helped in the preparation of the Pongal meal, made of lentils and rice. The evening marked the Tamil Heritage Month.

As per the census held in 2016, there are 157,000 Tamil residents in Canada, but it is estimated by the community that the number is around 300,000. The Parliament in Canada had taken a decision in October 2016 and had marked January to be celebrated as the Tamil Heritage Month. This measure was in recognition of the contributions, made by the Tamil-Canadians, towards the Canadian society. Moreover, it represented the wealth of Tamil culture and language and highlighted the significance of Tamilian heritage for future generations.
