PM of Canada Undertakes a Seven-Day visit to India for Better Ties

The Indian and Canadian National security advisers conducted a meeting, before Canadian PMs seven-day visit to India, aimed at boosting strategic ties. It will see a focus on counter-terrorism cooperation,  defense matters, and also deal with issues related to trade, investments and climate change. They prepared the ground for intensifying cooperation between PM Trudeau and PM Modi. India is concerned regarding increased Sikh radicalism in Canada.

Both the Prime Ministers are expected to move ahead and firm up, the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement signed by the 2 countries.

The negotiators had met in the past week, to prevail over the hurdles to finalize the pact.

Canada has invested around $15 billion in India, in the recent past, and signing a free trade pact, will encourage Canadian investors. In 2017, the merchandise trade between the 2 countries was placed at $8.4 billion, equally split between exports to and imports from India.

Several Canadian pension funds are eager to make an investment in India. The objective of the Canadian PM's visit, here would be to expand overall ties between the 2 countries.

They will also deliberate on better cooperation in the civil nuclear sector. Many cabinet colleagues are accompanying PM Trudeau, like the Foreign Minister, Science and Economic Development Minister, Defence Minister, Science and Sports Minister and Infrastructure Minister to India.

A Canadian diplomatic source said that the visit was an opportunity, for the PM, to promote close cooperation, on several issues, and emphasize Canada's support, for a diverse, united, and strong India, to strengthen the dynamic strategic partnership.

The PM will visit Delhi, Mumbai, Agra, Ahmedabad, and Amritsar. His visit to the state of Gujarat will be first, undertaken by a Canadian PM. He will be accompanied by his wife and children.

In Mumbai, he will meet top business leaders and representatives of Indian Film industry, for exploring opportunities in cinema. The Canadian Prime Minister will visit the Golden Temple, Amritsar, Jama Masjid Delhi, and Taj Mahal, Agra also. He will also deliver a lecture, to the Canadian and Indian business leaders.
