PEI PNP: Needs to Attract More Francophones to Meet Increasing Labor Needs
Prince Edward Island's (PEI) francophone economic development group has provided a series of information booklets that strives at bringing French-speaking newcomers.

Economic development and employability network (RDÉE) put together 8 booklets including relevant information about Prince Edward Island’s economic & francophone landscape.

The principal booklet titled: Opportunity Awaits: Bringing Francophone newcomers to Prince Edward Island speaks about the significance of francophone immigration for the PEI province’s economy and culture.

PEI is encountering the identical problems with an aging population as in the rest of Canada, and also the booklet recommends supporting francophone immigration is a potential solution.

Plenty of the Island’s major industries require bilingual (French & English) workers and there is an increasing demand for the latest entrepreneurs, the booklet states.

A Statistics Canada table saw the booklet reveals that PEI had a population increase rate of 6% between 2015 & 2018 which is the quickest rate in Canada through that time period.

These findings are corresponding with an Atlantic Provinces Economic (APEC) Council report stated that global immigration was the biggest contributor to P.E.I’s population increase. Between 2016 & 2018 P.E.I recorded the biggest number of latest immigrants related to the population size of PEI, the report stated.

In current years, PEI hasn’t been able to bring many French-speaking newcomers in the 10,000 newcomers living in the PEI, only 225 speak French.

While 34% of PEI’s population is above the age of 55 years, more than 51% of francophones who are living in the province are in that specific age group. Bringing more Francophones would further strengthen that community.

Industry and Demographics

The outlasting 7 booklets include demographic details and economic data of the regions in PEI as well as the province on whole.

The best 5 industries in PEI are:

  • Retail trade
  • Health care & social assistance
  • Agriculture, forestry, fishing
  • Public administration
  • Manufacturing

With 13% of the population who can speak French, PEI is the province with 3rd highest audience of French-speakers in Canada, following after Quebec & New Brunswick provinces.
