Ontario Plays a Major Role in Canadian Employment Growth During February

Employment in Canada was up by approximately 56,000 in the month of Feb thanks mainly to increases in full-time work in the province of Ontario.

Ontario Role in Canadian Employment Growth

Statistics Canada’s monthly Survey of Labour Force for Feb revealed Ontario posted a net employment increase of 37,000 for the February month. An addition of 59,000 in full-time employment offset the loss of 22,000 in part-time employment in the province of Ontario.

The rate of Unemployment Ontario’s continued steadily at 5.7% and, year-over-year, work in Canada’s most populated province raised by 192,000, or 2.7%, over Feb 2018.

Quebec and Ontario were principally responsible for an addition of 18,000 workers in the Professional, Technical and Scientific Services industry in Feb, which Statistics Canada told was the third “notable” rise in four months.

Correlated to Feb 2018, national employment in the industry increased by 6.8% (97,000), the agency announced.

Professional, Technical and Scientific Services comprise architecture, engineering, scientific research and development, accounting and legal services.

Statistics Canada also announced that jobs in public administration increased in Feb for a second following month, posting an addition of 14,000. Most of these job additions were in the provinces of Alberta and Ontario.

Different industrial areas that posted employment additions were agriculture and natural resources.

Totally, Canada attached a net of 67,400 full-time positions in Feb and dropped a net of 11,600 part-time positions for a net employment gain of 55,900.

The February results challenged expectations that job additions would be low. The results also set Canada first prior to the United States, which only posted a Feb gain of 20,000 latest jobs.
