Visas in Australia
Three British journalists in Australia who are there to report on the cricket are due to return home before the tour has ended. They will be unable to attend the Twenty20 cricket series of the England teams tour next week. They are having to leave Australia early as they have not been able to increase the time period specified on their visas, the visa which they have been granted is only valid for up-to 90 days and the cricket tour is for 100 days.

Although the England team have been somewhat disastrous during the tour, the reporters have spent the last three months following the teams unfortunate defeats. Reporting on the teams performance has meant that the journalists have been with them from the beginning of the tour which has taken them to every corner in Australia and will be quite devastated to miss out on reporting on the final results.

Australian visas saw a vast amount of changes in 2013, one of those affected was the subclass 400 which now has a time limit on it and is only valid for 90 days, this is the visa which has been granted to the reporting journalists. With a subclass 400 visa, the holder is entitled to remain in Australia for no longer than months, carry out the activity or work which was stated by the applicant when applying, partake in cultural or social activities which are not ongoing when invited to do so by an organisation in Australia and they are entitled to bring along family members, providing they were named during the application.

Cricket Australia have tried to help the journalists extend their visas and have contacted the authorities involved in making such decisions, unfortunately all routes have been tried in an attempt to gain an extension and they have been unsuccessful. Leaving before the tour has come to an end is disheartening but they are due to leave after the team have finished the fourth ODI, missing out on the opportunity to attend the last game which will take place in Adelaide as well as missing the three games left to play in the Twenty20 series. Many people find it bizarre that Cricket Australia have established a tour which totals 100 days, yet the visa which is available from the Australian Immigration Department to carry out work, only allows the holder to stay for 90 days.
