The Canada Federal Government announced a new immigration program to increase the number of immigrants to the Atlantic Canada region.

The Federal Ministers and the Immigration Minister John McCallum attended the meeting held on July 4, 2016, with the premiers of Atlantic Canada P.E.I. Premier Wade MacLauchlan, Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Dwight Ball, New Brunswick Premier Brian Gallant,  and Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil.

The pilot program initially aims to attract immigrants for the next three years. Immigrants will be attracted based on the needs of employers in Atlantic Canada. Immigration is considered as the growth strategy. The attempts will be made to expedite the visa processing.

According to the official plan for the year 2017, Atlantic Canada is going to attract 2000 new immigrants for the year. The numbers could double for the next year if the outcome is positive. If it is clear that Atlantic Canada requires a number of skilled immigrants, the measures will be taken to retain qualified individuals.

The pilot program will be launched in early 2017, for the next three years.
