Citizenship and Immigration Minister of Canada, Chris Alexander declared the new Citizenship Judge of the Vancouver area will be Trang Angie Nguyen. She has been appointed for a three year part time term in this new and such honorable post.
In past, Trang worked as an Accredited Court Interpreter for the Attorney General in British Colombia. She is well known in the Vietnamese Community through taking part in the Vietnam Heritage Day. She is also involved with Vietnamese Student’s Scholarships and Bursaries for Vietnamese Women’s Society and as a spokesperson for the Vietnamese Canadian Community. She was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.
We know that Citizenship Judges have all the responsibility for making decisions on citizenship applications and to preside over citizenship ceremonies. They also administer the Oath of Citizenship to new immigrants. Now, it is just a matter of time for us to see how the new Citizenship Judge of Vancouver performs her duties with responsibilities.
The previous Citizenship Judge of Vancouver was Ann Dillon. She was appointed on September 2009. She was a law practitioner in Toronto as a partner of Osler, Hoskin and Harcourt LLP and of Torys LLP. Months before her retirements, the process of approving one citizen as a Citizenship Judge had been started and over now with a success.
The Governor in Council on the recommendation of the Citizenship and Immigration Minister of Canada appoints the Citizenship Judges. They are chosen from a list of qualified candidates who have gone through the difficult screening, including a written exam, reference check and oral interview. Candidates for this post are evaluated against the skills required for such position : information seeking, decision making, judgment/ analytical mindset, leadership, self-confidence, self-control, writing ability, cross-cultural sensitivity and the most important, effective communication. So Trang had to determine a very long and hard path and now only time will tell if she deserves this post or not.
