The Board of Trade at Metropolitan Montreal will put their stand before the National Assemble Committee seeking an increase in the number of immigrants coming to the Quebec on Tuesday. The Trade body is insisting on an increase of immigrants from the current 50,000 to 60,000 by 2020 to the province.

Contradicting to the demand of the Board of the Trade, the Immigration Minister, Kathleen Weil's has asked to adopt a slower approach towards welcoming the immigrants. She has asked to limit the number of immigrants to 2,500 more a year by 2019, as this will help the government in implementing changes in the immigration procedures.

A reform also known as laws 77 was launched this year in spring with an aim to simplify and channelize the immigration system and to connect migrant workforce with the Quebec’s labor market.

Under Law 77, prospective immigrants willing to migrate to the province must submit a declaration of interest which will help the government in fulfilling the needs of the labor market. In an interview, Board of Trade, President Michel Leblanc said “he agrees with the changes, but cannot afford to keep its immigration numbers low, especially as Montreal grapples with an aging population.”

Quebec’s population represents 23 percent of Canadian Population whereas the province receives only 16 percent of the total immigration to Canada. The Trade body wants to maintain a balance between the two.
