Migration has much bearing on babies birth weights

London’s Oxford University recently published a study revealing the findings of research done across Hong Kong regarding babies born here. The results show that the key factor to babies birth weights in the country of Hong Kong is all the do with the migrant status of the parents. It has been proven that those who are Hong Kong natives give birth to babies who have a significantly lower weight at the time of birth than those who are born to parents whom have migrated here from mainland China.

Chinese born mothers are only half as likely to give birth to babies who have a low birth weight compared to mothers born in Hong Kong. Researchers from the University of Oxford who compiles this study investigated the circumstances surrounding the births of over 825,000 babies that have been birthed in Hong Kong over a 20 year period. The Journal of Biosocial Sciences Online discloses all the information gathered during the study and it is extremely in depth.

The weight one is at birth has been shown to be an extremely important factor for infant mortality, poor health and illnesses throughout a persons life stemming through childhood right up to old age. An extremely low birth weight is a baby born weighing less than 3lbs, low birth weight is a baby born weighing under 5 lbs and a high birth weight is over 11 lbs at birth. For a fully healthy child an average birth weight of between 7-8lbs has been shown to have a significant effect, it makes sense that if you’re fully healthy and well at birth you are destined to continue to be so.

The ‘Healthy Migrant Theory’ is somewhat backed up by the suggestions made in the recent survey, because so many national surveys that are conducted all seem to reveal the same results and this is that those whom are migrants into the country of Hong Kong tend to have a much higher standard of health than those who were born here. This may be due to the fact that women that originate from mainland China on a whole are usually more economically advantaged than women born in Hong Kong which as a direct result tends to make their babies heavier and healthier.

The theory is that those who have been able to afford migration into Hong Kong are likely to have come from a more affluent family and have received not only a higher class of education which assisted their career options but also will have received excellent health care themselves from day one. Those from more affluent families will have been reared on a diet of iron, nutrients, minerals, meat and zinc and these are what the human body needs in order to be in it’s best condition, and as it is now widely accepted that the condition that your body is in whilst conceiving, carrying and birthing a child has extreme bearing on the health of the unborn child.

Hong Kong is a country with mass poverty and so the chances are that not all expectant mothers here will have had the same health and education benefits that those from mainland China received and this shows in the study with the huge variation of birth weight between the two groups of women.
