Migrants in Scotland at record breaking number

One of the United Kingdoms world famous Universities - Oxford University runs a Migration Observatory where professional people study the immigration into the UK annually to reveal statistics which are wholly accurate and often cause controversy. The latest published study reveals that the immigration into United Kingdom's northern country of Scotland rose by an incredible 93% during the last ten years.

In 2001 it was recorded that there were around 191,500 migrants in Scotland and by 2011 this had risen to a staggering 369,248! At the time many countries joined the EU, including Estonia, Czech Republic and Poland, focussing just on Polish Migrants who now reside in the UK in the excess of one million people, over 55,200 of these Poles chose Scotland as their migration destination, in contrast at the turn of the millennium there were only 2,500 Pole in Scotland. Polish migrants are now the largest minority who reside in Scotland. Scotland has also seen Indian Migrants double in numbers over the previous decade to now some 24,000 Indian migrants calling Scotland home. And the study continues to reveal information of the same calibre with huge increases in migrants from Ireland, Pakistan and China as well as many others.

The lead researcher of the Oxford University’s Migration Observatory has said that although Scotland does have a much smaller population of migrants than England the study has shown that this has doubled in the last ten years and shows no signs of slowing or decreasing. Scotlands capital city, Edinburgh is home to the largest proportion of migrants with more than 15% of the population being foreign born, this is a huge 74,700 migrants in this city alone.

Scotlands first minister, Alex Salmond is urging the country to become separate from the United Kingdom at a referendum next year, the sole purpose is because the UK plans to tighten up the immigration systems and introducing many different parts to the process of migration including caps on different types of migrant categories and tighter restrictions, and this is said to possibly reduce the good effect that migrants have on Scotland's economy. The ambition is to be a separate country with separate rules to allow fast track migrants into Scotland under Skilled Worker Visas and to encourage those who chose Scotland as a study destination to stay on in the country after graduation.
