Mayor of London Calls for new Post-Study Work Visa

December 2017, 08
EMAIL  Print A+
Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, has projected a new post-study work visa meant for international students and is a critic of the changes made to the visa system in the UK. He has presented a proposal, calling for a flexible and fair immigration system, which can attract global talent, to London with fewer barriers and less official procedures. He feels that presently the government is not taking enough care of great talent to arrive in London.

He was working with the aim to make it easy for students to remain in the UK after completing their graduation and also work there. This follows the decision of the Government to end the Tier 1 post-study working route. He said that it was wrong for The British PM to take a decision for closing this route. This decision resulted in a considerable drop in students from India coming to the universities located in the country and starved London of great talent.

In 2017, there was a report that enrolments of students, from India in the UK, had decreased to 44% between 2011 and to 2015. Only 16,745 arrived instead of the previous figure of 29,900.

Presently, Khan has arrived on a trade mission to Pakistan and India to promote and build strong relationships, and also promote the “London Is Open” campaign.

The Home Office spokesperson remarked that the British government wants to discourage widespread fraudulent visa applications, which existed previously in issuing post-study work visas. The Government is aware of the importance of the immigration system, to ensure that the UK continues to remain a place, for the talented.  It is deeply committed, to create an immigration system, which serves the demands and needs of the people/businesses of the country.

All Post-study provisions need to have a balance, between providing competitive choices, for bright international graduates, to remain in the UK to work, and also to have safeguards against extensive abuse that was seen in the earlier schemes.

Reforms were carried out in 2010, to Tier 4 and 900 bogus colleges, were closed. This resulted in a shift in the institutions, where students from India study.

At present, 90% of students from India apply to the universities of the UK instead of the education colleges or other institutions. This was merely 50% in 2010, as per the figures of Home Office.

The mayor met several high-profile individuals who were in favor of additional post-study work visas.
