Major Reforms of Canada's Citizenship Act
The Canadian government has all set to roll a red carpet for overseas applicants by putting forth the long-awaited reforms of Canada’s Citizenship Act this week on 11 June 2015.

Major amendments to come into effect on 11 June include:
  • All the adult potential individuals must now be physically available in the province for a minimum duration of four years (1,460 days) during the six years prior to their application filing. Furthermore, they must also be physically available in Canada for 183 days in each of the requested four calendar years in the qualifying period
  • All the prospective individuals between the ages of 14-64 years are expected to possess minimum English/French language proficiency
  • Citizenship of Canada will be extended automatically to "Lost Canadians" whoever have born before 1947 and have not become the nation’s citizens on 1 January 1947, at the time when the Citizenship Act of Canada has first come into force. This major amendment is also applicable to the children of the potential applicant born in the first age group outside of Canada
  • It is also said that all the potential individuals must declare their intention to stay in the province, once they have become the qualified citizens by meeting the required income tax obligations to be qualified for the citizenship
  • The newly selected ICCRC (Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council) is the new authoritarian body for Canadian citizenship consultant. Only the qualified members of Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council such as notaries and lawyers will be paid to offer citizenship individuals with advice or representation
  • All the new application forms that are being aligned with the new regulations for eligibility will be obtainable in hand from 11 June 2015. However, applications accepted using the old forms will be given back to the applicant

Proponents added that the new amendments have been planned to put forth to make citizens participate in a better way in the Canadian economy. Citizenship and Immigration Minister, Chris Alexander noted in a statement that this new move would help newcomers to grab more opportunities and work in a better way for country’s economy.

With a strong intention to strengthen the value of the Canadian Citizenship, the existing government of the nation has planned to streamline the process and eliminate the long backlogs, according to the sources.

All the new reforms were anticipated to come into force by the end of the existing government’s electoral mandate that is going to end by October 2015.
