IT US Immigration

India has long been seeking more favourable US immigration rights. and now the country is getting the backing from some of the largest American software corporations. The multibillion-dollar industry has made it clear that there should be US immigration reform. They feel the US and India should work together to come up with a solution for both countries. The House Version of the Submitted Bill stated that there will be a restriction on H-1B visas for Indian nationals.

IT Industry fear a loss of foreign talent

IBM has also long supported a legislation that does not have any country-specific boundaries. Christopher A Padilla, IBM's vice-president has said that he thinks it is "critical" to the US economy that US companies can “access talent on a level playing field”. Only then will they be able to support investments and ultimately create additional jobs, which will in turn get the economy moving in the right direction once again.

Som Mittal (the president of Nasscom) has been lobbying for favourable changes to the US immigration bill. He believes the backing by the US software industry is very important as it shows that companies are aware that having these restrictions is not helping US corporations. Even Microsoft has made it clear that putting restrictions in place is not helping big business.

Barack Obama to discuss US Immigration policy

The timing of this renewed backing is not a coincidence as Manmohan Singh has an upcoming meeting with Barack Obama on the 27th September where the US immigration bill will be one of the main topics of discussion. Singh will surely appreciate all the backing from the major American software companies.

Large Indian companies have also taken the time to write to Manmohan Singh as well. They have asked for Singh to support them in their battle against the Bill and for him to debate its importance when talking to Obama.

Many officials have stated that this should be the most important issue that Singh brings up with Obama during his visit because failure to change the Bill would show a lack of respect from the US. They have also made it clear that Singh should detail the benefits that US corporations would see if the bill was changed.

In the event that the Bill is not changed, Indian officials have made it clear that they will seek the advice of the World Trade Organisation. In fact, many have implied that they will file a dispute if the Bill is passed without any alterations. One thing is for sure, the meeting between Singh and Obama will play an important part in any potential changes.
