Job Vacancies In Canada Cross Half Million Mark In March Quarter

The Canadian job vacancies were above the half a million mark during the initial quarter of the present year. There were yearly increases in each of the past ten quarters.

Many unfilled positions

The unfilled positions were 506,000 as at the end of the first quarter of the present year. This increased figure is 44,000 in comparison to the similar period last year. There was an increase in the Vacancy in 10 among the 14 provinces/territories of the country. Quebec was ahead with an increase of 21,365 vacancies in the initial quarter. Moreover, 50% of this job vacancy growth in Quebec was mainly in the three sectors of manufacturing, social assistance and health care, and finally in the food services and accommodation. The other provinces having an increase were Ontario at 12,430 and British Columbia at 9,320.

In Ontario, gains were concentrated in the social assistance and health care, retail trade, professional, scientific and technical services, and accommodation and food services sectors.

Across the provinces

In British Columbia, the major growth in vacancy happened in the transportation, warehousing and professional service sectors. In other provinces/territories, the increase was below the 1,000 positions.

Among the industry, the health care and social assistance had a major share of 9,885. This was owing to the increase in demand for nurses and for residential care, largely in Ontario and Quebec. There was large growth in Nova Scotia and PEI also. There was an addition of 9,115 vacancies involving professional as well as technical services sector. Vacancies increased in Ontario, BC and Quebec also.

Manufacturing also added 6,280 vacancies during the initial quarter and the major share of Job vacancy was in Quebec in this period.

Data on other sectors

  • Finally, the retail trade sector, added 4,050 vacancies mainly in Ontario, Alberta and Quebec.

  • Accommodation at 3,180
  • Educational services at 2,495
  • Construction at 2,835
  • Administrative services at 1,255
