IRCC stated that it will largely clear, the backlog of permanent residence applications, in the old Live-in Caregiver Program, by the December 2018.

It announced that it aimed to finalize 80 percent of applications for obtaining permanent residence, which was submitted, before Oct. 1, 2017, by caregivers or their family members.

Ahmed Hussen, Immigration Minister of Canada said that the commitments, made by the government today, meant that many Live-in Caregiver Program applicants, who experienced separation from family, or bureaucratic delays may soon attain permanent residence status. After meticulously providing care for the people, they will find the company of their beloved ones in Canada.

The program aims to provide, two years full-time, live-in employment, in Canada, to overseas nationals, in the capacity of caregivers, with a straight path to get PR Status. The program ended in 2014, but many caregivers, who were working, in the country, received an opening to submit a PR application. IRCC stated that 6,000 additional applications, for PR, under the LCP, can be given.

IRCC announced a pledge, to process 80 percent new LCP applications which were submitted after Oct. 1, 2017, within the tenure of 12 months.

The number of caregivers and their family members, on Oct. 1, 2017, who were waiting for finalization of their applications, was reduced by 63 percent. This was possible, owing to dedicating additional resources to clear the backlog of applications.

IRCC aims to finalize 5,000 additional cases more than the original estimate for 2017. Totally 20,000 new permanent residents will be allowed in Canada in the caregiver category during this year.

IRCC also mentioned that a few measures will be announced soon regarding a plan to eliminate LMIA fee of $1,000 for families in Canada who wished to appoint an overseas worker to take care of a person with a high medical requirement. The fee will be abolished for all Canadian families who have an income below $150,000, and who intended to appoint an overseas worker for providing childcare.
