Infosys, one of India's largest software firms has settled a US civil lawsuit by paying $34m over allegations it misused the visa system. It was thought that the company had used short term US visas to bring in workers, thus avoiding the limits on long term working visas.

H1b Visa
The row is centered on the issue of H-1B visas of which just 65,000 are available each year. These visas allows workers to remain in the US for one year and cost $5,000 each. It was claimed that Infosys had used B-1 visas which are designed for short trips, but are not restricted in terms of numbers. It was being investigated whether these visas were used to circumvent the restrictions on the long term working visas.

Infosys still claim that the allegation are untrue and remain unproven. They say the short term visas were used for legitimate business purposes, however they have agreed to a settlement.

Many Indian companies have complained that the rules on long term visas unfairly discriminate against then as they need highly skilled workers who are not available in the US and must come from India.
