Indian visa agreement with China called off

October 2013, 19

Indian officials have decided against signing off on a deal with China to liberalise visa agreements as a protest against a recent visa stapling incident. The visit of Prime Minister Monmohan Singh to China has also been called off.

India
The stapling incident saw two Indian archers unable to compete in a competition in China due to their visa status. China claims that the areas from which the archers come, Arunachal Pradesh, is actually a part of the state of China.

This incident has led to a disagreement between the countries and the eventual non-signing of the liberalisation agreement. In fact Indian officials have stated that they have concerns that China tends to act in unpredictable ways when it comes to visa agreements. There have been a number of incidents involving high level visits to China which have been refused at the last moment.

The new visa rules which were due to be signed would have led to a visa term of one year and a 30 day deadline for the screening of visa applications. This currently takes six months.
