Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, during her reply to the Lok Sabha, said that the Government is working on a scheme to liberalize visa policies to boost the service sector.

She stated that the new liberalized regime would encourage trade in the service sector, mainly tourism, medical tourism and education services. The proposal of a new visa policy is being considered by the Ministry of Home Affairs which is conducting deliberations with all other departments and stakeholders.

She said that her ministry supports a liberal visa policy that works in tandem with the Home Ministry regarding security checks to deal with the subject.

The Indian Service Sector makes up for 60 percent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP); its contribution is massive when it comes to trade and FDI inflows. This sector creates 28 percent of job opportunities and contributes to 35 percent of exports, 20 percent imports and total trade of 25 percent.
