Immigration at Christmas
The amount of people estimated to travel in to Hong Hong for Christmas day 2013 was set to be very high. The actual numbers of people entering as well as staying in Hong dropped this year as opposed to last year The immigration department of Hong Kong said more people spent Christmas day outside the city of Hong Kong this year. Over four hundred thousand people left Hong Kong for this years festivities. over three hundred thousand people did arrive on Christmas day but the number of arrivals the previous year was over four hundred thousand.

The immigration department were expecting over a million people to pass through their borders over Christmas and new year 2013 but so far the numbers are not as high as expected. A period between the 21st of December and the 25th of December was monitored. The outcome saw that over one point nine million people did enter Hong Kong but during the same time period over two point two million people left the country, choosing to spend the Christmas period elsewhere. With a recorded number of more people leaving than entering over an extremely busy time, the economy will suffer as less people in the country will mean less people will spend money in the country.

The high number of people leaving could be due to the high number of immigrants currently in Hong Kong, although live, work and go to school in the country if their family is not in Hong Kong then they will leave to spend the Christmas period in their own country with their families. Christmas is a time for family, family reunions are always high at this time of year, although many people who did travel into Hong Kong more than likely did so to visit and spend time with their family members. On the same hand the numbers seems to reflect that many left to see family. A country that sees a high number of legitimate immigrants will also see a high number of people leaving over certain periods, such as Christmas and summer periods for students to spend the time with loved ones who are still overseas.

Numbers will rise again in the new the immigration department are now estimating that departures will be high again over the lunar new year. Previous studies have already shown that more people travel during the lunar new year than Christmas and with Christmas departures high the lunar departures will be even higher.
