Immigrants Make a Great Stride in the Population of Canada

EMAIL  Print A+
The share of immigrants in Canada’s growing population has presently increased to 21.9 percent, from 20.6 percent seen in 2011. Most of the immigrants who arrived recently took the economic immigration program route.

This fact is based on the data collected in 2016 census. In 1921 the share of immigrants in Canada’s population was 22.3 percent of the overall population.

As per latest figures, as many as 7.5 million immigrants reside in the country and Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, attract several immigrants. But more people choose to settle in Atlantic Canada and the Prairie provinces. An estimate reveals the population of immigrants may reach 30 percent by 2036.

Their background has also been altered in the process. In the past, the main sources of newcomers were Europeans and Americans, but the most recent figures reveal that 61.8 percent are Asia born. The countries of origin of new immigrants were India, (147190), the Philippines (188805), China (129120), Pakistan(41480), Iran(42070), South Korea(21710)  and Syria(29945).

The census revealed that 60.3 percent immigrants arriving between 2011 and 2016 took the economic immigration program route. 26.8 percent were sponsored by a relative, spouse, or partner and 11.6 percent were refugees because the government took steps to settle the displaced quickly.

Immigrants arriving for Economic reasons are welcomed because they are capable to settle in the labor market. From January 2015, Canada’s immigration programs moved away from a time scheduled arrivals to a refined and successful Express Entry System through which the government invites eligible applicants for permanent residence on priority. This makes the entry of the brightest possible, manages the supply side, and reduces processing times. So far 140,000 Invitations have been issued. Many invitations were issued in 2017 as the system rewards persons to gain experience in Canada through working or studying.

With the settling of immigrants, communities are benefitted immensely as they possess a great deal of energy, skills, and expertise.

The preferred places to settle are Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal.

The share of immigrants in 2016, in the population, was 46.1 percent Toronto’s, 23.4 percent Montreal’s, and 40.8 percent Vancouver.

The Prairie Provinces are gradually receiving a big proportion of newcomers now. Regina and Saskatoon in Saskatchewan, Calgary, and Edmonton in Alberta are attracting them.

Immigrants find these destinations attractive for employment opportunities and better living standards.

Atlantic Canada provinces and territories are effectively using their nominee programs thereby changing the geographic distribution of fresh arrivals in Canada. Half of the new immigrants in New Brunswick, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Yukon had arrived using the PNP.  The share of recent immigrants deciding to stay in Ontario has decreased but the real number of immigrants living here has increased from three million to four million.

The province of Quebec 17.8 percent, and British Columbia 14.5 percent is also popular.

The presence of so many residents of Canada from an immigrant background is a gentle reminder to the world that Canada is a successful multicultural nation.  There is no place for ethno-nationalism but plenty of room for inclusiveness, growth, and openness.

It is a matter of happiness that some of the under-populated areas, like the Prairies and Atlantic Canada, receive more newcomers today. This would immensely help both the newcomers and the communities.

The projected increase in the overall immigrant population will help all the persons and families, who desire to live in Canada. Their dreams can become a reality soon.

It is the finest time to evaluate the options available currently and take further steps. We will extend a helping hand, in making it possible, through our guidance and professional approach.
