Illegal migrants in the USA face unprecidented winters on the streets

Snow

The United States are receiving an unprecedented winter this year (2014) with all 50 states being below freezing. Washington reports that the record breaking coldness is bringing the country practically to a stand still with mass road closures, many people missing work and school and emergency warnings being issues constantly, however those most affected are the homeless.

Washington gave a report to SKY News which spoke of the issue this is for those sleeping on the streets, they spoke of the homeless shelters in the state that can accommodate 700 people at a time though this does not help the other 11,300 homeless people in desperate need of shelter.

The homeless shelters are full to capacity and conditions are cramped but during this winter especially they are the more desirable option. Though many people temporarily staying here will be sleeping on the floors of the dormitories due to lack of space they are still receiving some sort of sanctuary even though they are packed in like sardines it may not be comfortable but it is not a life or death situation like those on the streets are facing currently.

Homeless people here are trying the best they can to keep warm by huddling together under thin fabrics and congregating around air vents for what little warmth they give out.

Those who are the most vulnerable are the illegal migrants amongst them. This is a terrible situation to find yourself in and surely will be something you had not planned on happening, the unprecedented coldness is to have an astronomical effect on these people in particular due to them being so unaccustomed to it. There are places such as soup kitchens and advise agencies for the homeless but if you have come here illegally you will have received no information on the country that is official and so these will be of no benefit as migrants will be unaware unless they are taken under a fellow homeless persons wing which can lead to a rocky road with each person in desperate situations having a tendency to be out for themselves.

These illegal migrants do have an opinion to get out of these cruel weather, a daunting option, but an option none the less. By taking themselves to a police station and seeking voluntary deportation due to their illegal status the US government will assist them home, they may also fine them and give them a permanent ban from the country and this on top of whatever they may face back home from disappointment from families for not ‘making it here’ to the threats from smugglers who got them here, this can all be enough to keep one shivering around an air vent for some more, unforeseeable, duration of time.

So far over 30 deaths have been reported of those who live on the streets and if there’s not a significant and quick change in the weather this is only going to rise.
