Hong Kong

Juliana Liu is the Hong Kong correspondent for the UK BBC news and she has recently reported on the huge increase of students into Hong Kong - and the reasons why we are seeing students travel here in such high numbers. The reality of a fast track onto the career ladder in Hong Kong is enticing students to migrate into the country from all over the world.

Students who wish to relocate for their studies into Hong Kong must be able to have the financial means to support themselves and they much also speak at least one language on top of their native tongue.

There are 300 students accepted into Hong Kong annually for an undergraduate degree programme where there are many courses which are taught and examined in English.

Students are coming here mainly for the job prospects as there is much more potential in Hong Kong, at present, to gain a good footing on the ladder for a prosperous career. One American student who was spoken to by the reporter said he chose Hong Kong as his place of study due to the ‘dismal post-graduation job search back home’.

The UK has always been a popular choice but the country received chaos in the job market prior to the recession of 2008 and is struggling to recover, for this reason postgraduate students find gaining paid employment extremely difficult there and so their searches are now bringing them to Hong Kong. It is normal for people to even struggle to find unpaid work in the UK in the present climate and the opportunities there are not what they once were.

Hong Kong began to enrol international students in the year 2005, initially applications for degree programmes did not begin to soar until after 2008, when the rest of the world was in the economical crisis. This year saw a 20% rise in the intake of students into the country.

The necessity of having another language is for the reason that it is entirely beneficial to the migrant students in Hong Kong who wish to stay on and work in the country after their graduation. Hong Kong employers are more likely to employ an applicant who speaks a widespread language in the country such as Chinese or Mandarin. The job market here is not competitive yet, but if the intake of migrants continues to rise like this then it soon will be and so to better your odds, following official advice is key.
